Stedmans Store, Main Street, Liverpool, N.S.

The first Stedmans Store on Main Street
The first Stedmans Store was located at 210-212 Main Street where John Henley and Jeff Langille have their offices today. It was first the Five and Dime I think and later Stedmans. It eventually moved next door to where Packet's Landing is now (where the Dollar Store is). At this location it was a large and at the time, very modern store. It was 2 levels and sold men's, women's, and children's clothing, footwear, jewelry, toys, school supplies and even had a lunch counter called the Copper Grill. Joyce Whynot, Eleanor Shupe, Kay MacNutt, Jessie Whynot and my aunt Barb West worked at the lunch counter for many years. I went for lunch there every single school day from the beginning of grade 9 until the end of grade 12. The girls that ran the lunch counter worked hard and still always carried a smile. Lots of great memories going there during my high school years and met lots of other regulars who went there for lunch. The girls from the Royal Bank were there everyday and we all created a lunchtime friendship. At one time the Liverpool Copper Grill was given an award for the busiest of any Stedmans Store in Canada.

Removing the Stedman Store sign in December 1989
Carol Uhlman, Lil Croft and her sister Alice Huskins I believe worked at Stedmans for years, also Charlotte Jollimore and Christine Schrader. Nick and Diana Wakeham were the last owners of the store when it closed for business in 1989. The building was eventually sold and made into several rental units and it has housed the Dollar Store forever it seems, also Ann Thomson Realty and the Physioclinic. Janice Manthorne had a hair salon there too and there was also a small cafe in the building at one time. Sylvia Collins had a shop there too. The closing of Stedmans in the later 1980s started a ball rolling where we saw places like the Peoples Store and other stores close their doors. If you worked there or if you remember others who did please leave a comment.

  2. I have fond memories of going to the Stedman's store for lunch with mu Mom...I loved the booths, just like the Met as well...When the Wakeham's owned it, I was really good friends with their daughter April....Mister Wakeham cracked me up! Anyway, near the last days of the store, Mr Wakeham actually closed the downstairs section of the store, and he allowed April and her grade 8 class to hold a Dance in the basement as a fundraiser...it may have been for our trip to Quebec...it was so much fun! Thanks for the memories Tim!

  4. My Aunt Rita Dagley worked there for a while when the Wakeham's owned it. I remember going there for lunch with Mom and my sister and loved the booths. The waitresses were always so friendly (as were all staff). My favorite menu item was the "Big Eric" which was a fish burger with lettuce, tartar sauce and a cheese slice :-) I was always fascinated with the swinging door to the kitchen with a circular window in it to see if someone was coming out when you were going in. (It reminded me of the restaurant kitchen doors in the Sesame Street skit with Grover and the man that makes the various sounds...silly isn't it the things you relate to each other).
I'd go there to look at toys and one of my first memories was the mechanical ride-on horse that was just inside the door. I remember going there and begging mom to let me ride it.
I also remember there were candy machines in the entry way. I remember buying my sweatshirt that to commemorate the 1987 designation Queens County got as Christmas Tree Capital of the World that year :-)

  6. I sure do miss that lunch counter at Stedman's. My favorite thing there was lemon bread. It was so moist and lemony and could be bought for 35 cents if I remember correctly. In any case.. it doesn't matter which recipe I try, I could never get mine to taste like the one sold at the Stedman's Lunch Counter.

  9. Tim....Aunt Shirley (Wefer) worked there for many years (the newer one with the lunch counter), and I believe Daphne Joudrey also worked behind the lunch counter. When I worked at the Town Hall I ate there Mon. to Fri. 1-2:15 with another co-worker and the girls from the lawyers offices. Great food, lots of laughs and great memories. The best lunch counter in town. Loved their bacon and eggs. I remember when I turned 19 I said I wanted a new car and Kay MacNutt and Daphne Joudrey bought me a little cast iron orange volkswagon with a flower on the engine hood.....I still have it and that was 37 years ago! I loved the old Five and Dime....the big bins of candy all along the candy counter when you first waked in. There were two sets of doors if I remember correctly....'in' on one side and 'out' on the other. Loved that store.
