Dixie Lee in Liverpool, N. S.

September 6,1972 Liverpool Advance

The Met on the left - where Dixie Lee was located
Back in the 1970's Dave Bursey opened up a Fried Chicken Take Out in the back of the Metropolitan Store called Dixie Lee. It was a small place, the front of it was all large windows and a double door and inside there were no chairs to sit on. The counter went from one end of the take out to the other and if the workers needed to get out from behind the counter they had to lift a section of the counter and open what was almost like a gate under the counter. Red was the color of Dixie Lee and it seems to me both the phone and cash register were red. The chicken was delicious and the cole slaw was to die for. Dixie Lee was at this location for many years and eventually moved to the Waterfront Plaza. Dave Bursey sold Dixie Lee to Hugh Byrne and he eventually changed the name to Hugh's Fin & Feather. It stayed opened for a short time after. There were also Dixie Lee restaurants in Bridgewater and Barrington but they also closed many years ago. Today the only Dixie Lee Restaurants that I know of are in New Brunswick. The chicken is still as tasty as it was years ago and it still is served in a small cardboard house shaped box. Not much has changed with Dixie Lee. It still has the same red boxes for the chicken, white for the fish and the cole slaw recipe has not changed. Some of the workers who worked at Liverpool Dixie Lee were Rose (Roy) Mansfield, and Tish (Fisher) Huskins. If the readers know others who worked there please comment.

  2. I believe Eleanor (Whynot) Wentzell worked there too as a manager, and after Dixie Lee closed she went with KFC. So who are the girls and guy in the pic? I think I might recognize 3 possibly 4, but not too sure on the 4th one. I'm guessing left to right (2nd person)Heather Veinot, Joanne Toplis, Tammy Levy and the 4th one looks something like Sonya Whynot, but I don't think it is. The first girl on the left looks familiar but I can't think of her name...Penny comes to mind. I believe she use to live in the Prefabs, and I have no idea who the guy is. Maybe if I could see his face. Am I close at all Tim?

  4. The people in the photo (using maiden names) are left to right: Michelle Verge, Heather Veinot, Joanne Toplis, Tammy Levy, April Whynot and Trevor Dyson. Our entire class went there for lunch (I believe as a prize for selling the most magazine subscriptions for fundraising).

  10. Mom (Heather Whynot) worked there. Once in awhile as a treat I would get go there during my lunch hour at school (grade 5 or 6 I believe). It was a big deal to go there with my friends at lunchtime. Mom would sometimes be working or Rose. Those are the only two I really remember.

Hi..I worked for Dave at Dixie Lee from 1978-1981 approx...I replaced Holly Smith (Lewis) as she was going to have her first baby. I was the book-keeper/secretary and the office was located at Dave and Diane's home at the end of Boehner Street , where Garnet Winchester lives now. I remember each morning I would go down to the store which was located at the back of the Met Store..do the store float, orders etc.. it was an early start each morning for the girls, and they were very hard workers. Some names I remember are Rose Roy, Marjorie Francis , Bonnie Francis and Peggy Malone, ..we all had great laughs and fun working together.and lots of great stories that's for sure. Dave and Diane were nice folks. , haven't seen them in years. Hoping there is a Dixie Lee coming back here..I think it would be a great addition to the eating establishments here. and I feel personally they would be very, very busy.......:)
