The Liverpool Superstore....what was there before it was built?

The Liverpool Superstore property is built where I lived the first years of my life. My grandfather, Victor Gerhardt owned the house which was approximately where NSLC is now located. He purchased the house in 1968 from Florence Hirtle (wife of Hector) and lived there until 2000. The yard was beautifully landscaped with lots of phlox and peonies and a beautiful beach rock wall around the property, even in the back yard. I was told Mr. Hirtle brought the rocks by horse and wagon in order to construct it in the 1940s. Next door was the Union Hall owned by the Union at Bowater. Bingos, dances, weddings and more were held at this hall and I attended my share of functions in that building. My grandfather's house, the original part of it was built around 1880 and had several owners including Henry Myra (grandfather of Dorothy Killam who passed away earlier this year at almost age 97). The Union Hall I had heard, was an auto repair business before being used as a hall. I've never found proof of that but had heard by word of mouth. One of the photos of the Union Hall being demolished you can see the speed limit sign 50...last I looked that pole and sign was still there just to give you all some idea where things were located. The heavy machinery doing the demolishing are sitting in my grandfather's driveway. It's strange how quickly we can forget things. I mentioned my grandfather's house to many over the last few years and people just can't seem to recall it ever being there. Lots of great memories in that house for me and my family, I even have the old mantle from it as a keepsake - memories of my childhood!
