Was that the house that used to be on Main St. close to the museum area? I'm thinking of a house that an elderly woman lived in there alone in the 50's and early 60's .
Barney and his wife Minnie had a great apple orchard in his field at the rear of his home. The lower part of his home was first built away back in the 1780's by one of Elisha Freeman's sons. Barney had a fine gun collection, an 8 gauge shotgun, first I'd seen. My mom helped them in late years, the 50's, with their wash, etc. Barney and Minnie are in the 1901 Milton Census, age 33 and 29 and resided up West St. near where the Greenhouse was. In 1900, Xmas Eve some Milton boys removed a cow from the barn on this property and put it in the Church where it remained till the next day. Below is a brief description of the event from John G. Morton's Diary. "We have in Milton a lot of most disgraceful toughs and blackguards any county can produce. Last night they began ringing the Church Bells before 10 o'clock and kept it up all night. They drove E.G.Freeman's horse and J.H.Cook's cow into the Baptist Meeting House, and a pair of steers into the Christian Church, breaking a window to get in, and there allowed those animals to remain in the sacred edifice wallowing in their filth all night. Some reward has been offered for the apprehension of the guilty parties but I don't believe any steps will be taken by the Church Officers to bring them to justice. Cannibals from the South Seas Islands would have more respect for a sacred edifice than those brutes who in drunken squads prowl about after dark. It is impossible to get a constable to act".
